Accessibility statement

A worried homeowner should be able to read these guides on any device, with any ability. This page explains what we do, how we test it, and how to tell us if something doesn't work for you.

Our goal

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. This is a goal we work toward, and it is not a claim of certified conformance, because the site has not had a formal outside audit.

What we build in

Below I am sharing the accessibility features built into the site.

  1. Keyboard use: You can reach menus, links, FAQ dropdowns and forms with a keyboard, and a "Skip to content" link appears first.
  2. Clear structure: Pages use one main heading, ordered subheadings and labeled page regions for screen readers.
  3. Text alternatives: Images and diagrams have written descriptions, and key figures also appear in the page text or tables.
  4. Readable contrast: Our colors are checked for contrast in automated tests.
  5. Light and dark modes: The site follows your device setting, and you can switch with the button in the header.
  6. Flexible layout: Pages adapt to phones, tablets and desktops, and they work when you zoom.
  7. Plain language: We write short sentences and explain technical terms. Our glossary defines the rest.
  8. Labeled forms: Every field on our contact form has a visible label.

How we test

We run automated accessibility checks with Lighthouse and validate our HTML when pages change. Automated tools can't catch every problem, so these checks are a starting point. We have not yet tested the whole site with people who use screen readers or other assistive technology.

Known limits

Below I am sharing the areas where the site may fall short.

  1. Text inside diagrams: Diagrams are images, so their text can't be selected or resized on its own. The written description and the page text cover the main points.
  2. Wide tables on small screens: Some tables scroll sideways inside their frames.
  3. Third-party content: Ads and links to other sites are outside our direct control.
  4. Contact form: The form opens your own email app, so it relies on that app being set up. You can also email us directly.

Tell us about a problem

If part of the site doesn't work for you, please contact us. Tell us the page address and what happened, and we will work on a fix or send you the information in another way.
