How this site is funded

FoundationAnswers is free to read. This page explains how the site earns money, how you can spot it, and how we keep it away from our advice.

The short version

We sell no repairs. Our funding comes from display advertising and a small number of clearly labeled product links. Repair companies can't pay us to appear in a guide or to change a verdict.

Ads and product links are added in stages, so you may not see them on every page.

Display advertising

Once advertising is enabled, ads are served by Google AdSense. Google chooses most ads automatically, based on the page and, where allowed, on your browsing. We don't choose each ad, and an ad is not a recommendation from us.

Ads never appear inside a verdict box or a cost table. Our privacy policy and cookie policy explain how advertising cookies work and how to manage your choices.

Some guides may link to a product that helps you follow the advice, such as a hygrometer for checking humidity or a crack gauge. If you buy through one of those links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Below I am sharing the rules we follow for these links.

  1. They are labeled: A product link is marked, in line with the US Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides.
  2. They are useful: We link to a product only when a guide explains why you might need it.
  3. They are not test results: We don't test products ourselves, so a link is not a lab-tested review.

What we never accept

Some things would damage the reason this site exists. Below I am sharing what we turn down.

  1. Payment from repair companies: No contractor can buy a mention, a ranking or a recommendation.
  2. Sponsored guides or reviews: We don't publish paid content.
  3. Paid links: We don't sell links in our guides.
  4. Lead selling: We don't sell your details to contractors.
  5. Advertiser influence: No advertiser has a say in a verdict, a threshold or a cost range.

How we keep money and advice apart

Every guide follows our methodology, and sources are named so you can check them. Revenue plays no part in what a guide says. If you think an ad or a link has influenced a page, or you see an ad that looks misleading, please tell us.

Advertising enquiries are welcome through our contact page, for display advertising only. You can return to our independent homeowner guides at any time.
